As part of the exhibition The form of Co-Creation: reality in the“Creative Commons Era” at the Kyoto City University of Arts Art Gallery, 3 chairs were downloaded and produced in Japan. From exhibition text: “Design” means an interface that synthesizes innovative network and production system. In this scheme, artists and designers play very important roles as professionals who critically verify the potentials or vision of our environment, or as incubators who raise thecreativity of co-creation through introducing their efforts to users. They stand at the frontier of the new world of creation."

From Open Innovation (OI) to Innovation Ecology (IE) |
I will be speaking at X Treat conference in Berlin about....Open Design. From the website:
From Open Innovation (OI) to Innovation Ecology (IE):
Open innovation describes an innovation paradigm shift from close to
open innovation. In the last years, a great amount of practices
associated with this new paradigm have drawn public attention and have
been discussed in companies and various OI conferences as well.
For x treat #3, Open Innovation Design, we would like to re:think the
existing paradigm and focus on new aspects and developments.
Organizations following the OI paradigm (implicitly or explicitly)
exchange knowledge with partners in their value-creation network. Taking
this as a starting point, we are interested in how organizations design
their OI activities to establish a sustainable Innovation Ecology with
their relevant partners (suppliers, customer, employees, competitors,
governments, etc.) in a context of coopetition.
Again we invited some distinguished guests and will use their
multiplicity of expertise in order to address the following questions:
- Inside-Out perspective: How can organizations design their OI
activities to benefit from it, i.e. to enhance their own innovation
performance?
- Outside-In perspective: How can organizations design their own OI
activities in order to be an interesting partner within emerging
Innovation Ecologies? How do sustainable Innovation Ecologies emerge and
develop? Can they be designed? How & who can influence the
characteristics of an Innovation Ecology?
- User-centric perspective: How can service providers support
organizations to establish an Innovation Ecology in a beneficial manner?
How does Design (Thinking) provide additional resources to get more in
inside in the shaping of this processes?
- Theoretical perspective: How to describe an Innovation Ecology from a
conceptual point of view? Is there added value if we use
system-theoretical aspects in analyzing Innovation Ecologies? What can
we learn by combining practical and theoretical insights?

Open Design in context of copy culture |
snapshot UdK 2011, DMY International Design Festival
Mythos Original – about Copies, Duplicates and Reproductions for some its a compliment, for others a crime – at the same time current and controversial: when is it an inspiration, reference, homage, when is it a rip-off? At the opening on the 2 June at 7pm a differentiated view on this topic will be debated in a Design Salon with the design theorist Michael Erlhoff among others.

Presentation and workshop at Hacking At Random international technology & security conference. |
On August 13-16, 2009 the 20th anniversary edition of the four-yearly Dutch outdoor technology-conference will take place near Vierhouten, NL. Four days of technology, ideological debates and hands-on tinkering.
One of the events on the conference is the (un)limited design contest. It is a 3D design competition open to everybody. Designers are invited to make use of the computer controlled prototyping machines available in a Fablab to realise their ideas. There are 3 categories in the contest: Form, Food & Fashion. In each category a well-known Dutch designer will contribute one design for other competitors to build on.
I will be presenting my work and ideas in the context of this contest along with Neil Gershenfeld (Fablab) and Adrian Bowyer (Reprap), and hold an Open Design workshop or two later on. |

Prototypes and Experiments 03, July 2009 |
One of my Open Design products will be on display at the third round of the "Prototypes and Experiments" group exhibition at the Aram Gallery in London beginning in late July.
From the Aram Gallery website: "Prototypes and experiments are critical elements in the development process of any new design. The prototype is the manifestation of the design idea on its way to production; experiments are more like steps on the way. The prototype, being part of a process, makes more real an idea that will lead to a final piece, and is not made with the intention of being sold or shown outside the designer’s studio. Experiments are also unique artefacts but are even less refined and sometimes constitute a partial sketch on the way to the prototype." |

The DMY Asia Exhibition Tour 2008
|
Open Design will take part in the coming DMY tour of Berlin design. From the DMY press release: " Design created in Berlin has established itself as a constant factor within the international design context. Since 2005 DMY Berlin has been involved in the promotion of international exchange and co-operation in design on a significant level. An integral part of this activity is the promotion of Berlin-based and German designers and their product developments to a broader public, the international trade press and a wide panel of experts. Continuous exhibition and cooperation projects in Korea and Japan are evidence of DMY Berlin's attention to the quickly developing creative industries in Taiwan, Japan and Korea from an early stage on. From October 4th the works of 18 Berlin designers and design collectives will be shown at four design fairs and festivals in Taiwan, Korea and Japan via the DMY Asia Exhibition Tour. Once again DMY Berlin contributes actively to support and develop exchange and co-operations in the field of design between Europe and Asia."
